A Look at Time Management

By Desiree Rivera Prior to entering college many students do not truly understand the concept of time management. In fact, many students fail to realize the importance of being able to manage their time properly.  Time management is critical to a student's success and learning how to master this will prove to be beneficial throughout their life; especially once they begin careers. Possibly without even realizing it PTK members attending the NY Regional Conference had to use their time wisely to ensure that they were prepared and on time for sessions and workshops. The time management workshop was successful at conveying the importance of mastering this skill as it will always be relevant in our lives. For many students trying to balance attending classes, studying, completing assignments, extracurricular activities, work, and finding free time seems almost impossible.  Although it is not easy and requires discipline, time management is about figuring out what works best f

They call it Networking… with PTK I call it Fellowship!!!

Moreen Tonny When I arrived at the Hilton hotel in Tarrytown I was welcomed by friendly staff. My first welcoming gift was a delicious hot chocolate chip cookie- the best in town! Situated in a suburban neighborhood in Westchester county, the hotel offered the PTK delegation an intimate atmosphere were no could escape mingling and networking opportunities all weekend long. Following the opening session on Friday night was a Fellowship event; teams composed of scholars from different chapters competed against each other in trivia game. While others may see this as an ice breaker between complete strangers, I saw it as an opportunity to start new friendships and get to know my fellow Kappans sooner and faster. Among the activities planned for the participants were a series of workshops related to PTK’s four hallmarks.  Although making connections was my primary goal for the weekend, getting to start these conversations was very intimidating. Therefore, when given the occasion to

Shopping For Colleges

Stella Akuzie The market was full and there were people all over the place. The colors were bright and plentiful. Those selling were at their best with welcoming smiles everywhere; they were eager to sell their wares to the shoppers. Those shopping were not in haste either, there were so many stalls available that it would be a mistake to visit one and leave. Anybody would think this is a normal market and in a way it is except that the sellers are actually colleges and the shoppers are PTK members in 2-year colleges looking to transfer to four year colleges. Looking at the number of four year colleges and the eagerness on their faces one would think transferring from a two year college to a four year college is the easiest thing ever. Not so. Experience has shown it could as stressful as ever.  I took a deep breathe and prepared to take a long leisurely walk in this market and see what I come up with. It was to be an interesting walk. I went from table to table basking in the

Keys To Overcome Public Speaking Anxiety

Ange Akproh On the weekend of March 1 -3 rd , the Alpha Theta Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa gave me the opportunity to attend the regional conference that took place in Westchester New York. During the conference, several workshops were made available to the attendees. I personally attended the Public Speaking workshop from which I learned how to overcome speech anxiety.             Speaking in public is and remains a challenge for most of us even after several years of practice. Most of the time we encounter some degree of anxiety when facing the public because we fear to ruin the moment. Even though it is hard to face this challenge, speech anxiety can be overcome through many different ways. First, the choice of the topic makes a difference. Selecting a topic you know and enjoy makes the job easier. You’ll find researching and planning your speech delivery relatively easy which leaves more time for practice. When you’re familiar with the topic, it is also easier to exp

Why Should We Care About Critical Thinking? Does It Really Matter?

Hassaan Chaudhary              One of the great benefits you can get from Phi Theta Kappa is that you are given this golden opportunity to attend their annual conferences. PTK usually conducts three fabulous events during the year where a lot of workshops are organized for the students. The primary goal for these workshops is to enhance students’ skills and expertise and to applaud their efforts and hard work that they have done in their campuses throughout the period. On March 1, we went to Tarrytown, NY to attend PTK Regional Conference. A slew of chapters from different colleges were there to represent their respective chapters. As expected, many workshops (including communication, team-building, networking) were also conducted for the participants where they learnt about different techniques on how to improve themselves as a student.             I opted to go to the ‘Critical Thinking’ workshop. The main reason I chose to attend this workshop because I always wanted to pa
