Phi Theta Kappa: A True Gem

By Sandhya Lama

Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society provides a platform for students to access professional development and educational opportunities. It conducts various workshops to develop soft skills, leadership and fellowship skills. It provides students with the scholarship opportunities and at the same time, gives the opportunity to increase their network. It efficiently helps students to connect them to the available resources in the school.

Under the Alpha Theta Phi chapter, there is service and scholarship committee, leadership committee, and recruitment and outreach committee. I had a chance to serve as a committee leader for the Recruitment and Outreach Committee. The Recruitment and Outreach Committee is comprised of the communication and outreach team, strategic team, media production team, and execution team. The committee members are divided into the first three significant teams while all of them are the part of the execution team. The strategic team works on ideas to increase the retention for Phi Theta Kappa, while the outreach team implements those plans to recruit people. This Fall 2017, we focused on building personal stories through short videos to inform about our roles and what PTK offers. We also worked on classroom recruitment to tell classmates about PTK, process, and benefits of being a member.

Personally, I have benefited from PTK. This leadership role has helped me become a good leader, sharpened my public speaking skills, increased my network and boosted my confidence. Attending PTK workshops was a crucial learning experience for me to explore my potential. It connected me with the opportunity of being a student senator and peer advisor. It was all because of the PTK experiences, which gave me strength and motivation. Therefore, PTK is a true gem and being a member is worth it.
